What is Good Things?
Good Things is the Substack account blog for Jamie Franklin. I am the priest in charge at Holy Trinity Winchester and the host of the Irreverend: Faith and Current Affairs podcast and the Holy CofE podcast. I am the author of the little read and little mentioned Charles Taylor and Anglican Theology: Aesthetic Ecclesiology and of the upcoming The Great Return: Why Only a Restoration of Christianity Can Save Western Civilisation which will (Lord-willing) be published in 2025 by Hodder Faith.
On this blog, I try to steer away from negative political commentary and to write about things that are life-giving for me. I write about spiritual matters, the Bible family life, disciplines and habits that help me develop, and I occasionally talk about my intellectual passions and interests.
I give away much on this blog for free but there is a small paywall of £5 a month or £50 a year for the full thing. This paywall helps me because it gives the blog a certain amount of privacy which it simply wouldn’t have if it were entirely public. More to the point though, I am not paid for my vicar-ing role (which is part-time) and am dependent upon the income I make through my online content and other writing. Therefore, you are directly helping me and my family through signing up to the blog.
When not blogging, I am a husband and father of four. The Charles Taylor book I mentioned above is a conversion of my DPhil thesis which I was happy enough to receive from the University of Oxford. Prior to that I was at King’s College London and a little while prior to that I was at the University of Kent. I have degrees in Theology, Biblical Studies, Philosophy and English Literature and I am ostensibly trained for effective ordained ministry in the Church of England. I also used to teach music a bit, but I am not a brilliant musician.
Thank you for reading and I look forward to sharing with you some good things.
