Transcending the Horizontal
I’d like to share from two sources of learning this week. One is the book Stolen Focus by Johann Hari, and the other is from Pierced by Love by the contemporary Anglican theologian and spiritual writer Hans Boersma. This is my second read of Pierced by Love and I have to say it is a deeply rich and compelling book looking at the practice of lectio divina from a patristic and medieval perspective. Really inspiring.
Anyway, this is all about divine therapy for me, so you’re welcome to listen in to it. And if you find it helpful then I’m very pleased.
To begin with, the problem of time. Time is a problem: there’s never enough of it. I’m always either thinking about something that’s coming up in the future, or worrying about something that took place in the past. Our minds take us away from the present moment with their capacity to situate us mentally in different places.
