My musical prescription for this entry is Dawn by Dario Marianelli. This is from the soundtrack of the 2005 film adaptation of Pride and Prejudice. I rewatched this film recently and to be frank I do not think it anything particularly special. I remember viewing the BBC serial adaptation in the 1990’s with my mother with you-know-who as Mr Darcy and I am thus incapable of giving much shrift to any further attempts at the realisation of this narrative. The BBC version is the definitive issue and will never be improved upon so there is very little point in trying. By contrast this film version feels rushed and derivative. It is particularly galling that fantastic actors such as Matthew Macfadyen and Tom Hollander seem somehow to fall short of the potential of the material and their talents by virtue of the fact that they are trailing in the wake of other actors who were happily involved in the equivalent of a televisual miracle.
